As our kids grow up, we do our best to teach them all of the important things. We teach them everything from how to keep their room clean to being a kind and positive member of society. But once our kids get to that sweet age of 18, and they’re ready to leave the nest to really start their own life, you’ll find yourself thinking of all the things you may not have taught them. I wanted to make sure my daughter was ready for the world when she left for college, so I used it as one last chance to leave a few important lessons with her.
When my daughter, Grace, graduated high school, I took some time to write an entry in her journal titled “A Few Life Lessons From Dad”. I not only took my own greatest bits of wisdom, but I reached out to my close network of family, friends, and mentors to get their input, too. I combined all of these amazing lessons together in her journal for her to take with her on her new journey.
When I gifted her this journal following her 18 years of life, these lessons were the final entry. It actually ended up being the first one she read, and sitting beside her as she read the most important gift I could give her was an unforgettable experience. It’s safe to say there wasn’t a dry eye in the room! I could feel how much this gift meant to her, and to me.
As a dad, watching your baby girl head off to college is never easy. There are so many pieces of life that come together, and you start to wonder if you gave her the necessary tools to live the life you want her to live. With this journal entry, and the many more I’ll continue to add, I can feel confident that she’s ready for the world ahead.
You can start leaving these important lessons to your kids too! With the Legacy Journal App, you can create journal entries that not only capture important memories through your child’s life, but you can leave behind the pieces of wisdom you’ve learned over the years.
And remember – you’re creating your legacy, each and every day
