Are you prepared for Valentine’s Day?

This post is brought to you by Jessica Cleveland – mother, writer, creative producer at Under the Tower Productions, and team member at Legacy Journal App.

Good day to you all! A couple of weeks ago, I posted about my struggles in parenting and I wanted to take the opportunity to thank you all for the warm wishes, sympathy, and advice. It really means a lot. Just to update – the meeting went well. I cried, they cried, we are all on Team Riley and want him to succeed. There will be testing and we are doing everything in our power to help him.

Is everyone excited for Valentine’s Day? I can’t say that I am. It used to be fun, as a kid. Getting to exchange the cards and candy with friends, finding out who had a secret crush on whom; finding out that someone actually secretly admired YOU (didn’t happen to me, but I am sure it happened to someone!). Those days were the best.

Then we all grew up and it became more of a romantic holiday (for most). Flowers and chocolates, cards and proposals… Valentine’s Day is a time of love and connection. Now that we are parents, it just feels like more work! Don’t get me wrong, I love it. I thoroughly enjoy crafting with my kid and creating gifts for his classmates. He isn’t as into it as I am, but I imagine that’s more of his personality than anything.

The one thing I don’t like is having to go to events with all the other parents. I am not a super social person by nature, and small talk isn’t generally in my wheelhouse, which makes those events super awkward. Add to that the greeting. Here is an example of what transpired this morning, at the Valentine Box decorating party:

Other mom: “I’m *Katie’s mom.”
I shake her hand.
Me: “Hi, I’m Jessica, Riley’s mom.”
Her: “Oh…”

Yeah… that is just not encouraging to continue a conversation. I know my child misbehaves and the other children probably tell their parents about him. People can be super judgmental and it makes for uncomfortable situations. Thankfully, I know I am not there for them or to make friends. I am there for my little guy.

We had a blast decorating his box! Do you and your family have any Valentine traditions? Let us know! And be sure to document them using the Legacy of Love app! xoxo
