Sony Pictures just released Michael B. Jordan’s new film, “A Journal for Jordan” and as the guy who developed the Legacy Journal digital journaling app, I am not going to lie . . . I am stoked! The movie is directed by Denzel Washington, and it’s based on the true story of a soldier deployed to Iraq who keeps a journal of love and advice for his infant son. The journal’s impact on him as well as the impact on his relationship with his child’s mother is profound, and it’s a beautiful story of love and family.
I was in the Navy before I had kids, but I can tell you that when you are deployed and away from home, letters, photos, and small reminders of your loved ones are tremendously important. Thanks to the advent of digital communications, it is easier than ever to stay in touch, but the film shows us the unique connection that a journal can create for parents and their children, and how the simple act of writing can change our lives for the better. Today, Michael B. Jordan’s character, Charles Monroe King (Jordan), might have chosen a digital journaling option like the Legacy Journal app instead of a traditional written diary, but regardless of how you capture and share advice and wisdom, the movie shows that when you make the effort, you build your legacy.
You will also see in the movie just how hard it can be to get started with a journal (digital or physical). Most of us at one point or another will start a journal and never get very far with it. In fact, in A Journal for Jordan, when he receives the journal as a gift, he asks, “what am I supposed to do with this?” But once Michael B. Jordan’s character starts putting down thoughts, you see it become easier for him to share the things that as a parent he considers meaningful. And through this lens of a father deployed in harm’s way you are reminded that there are no guarantees in life, so capturing the precious moments and love is not something you should ever take for granted.
My mission is to help parents connect with their children. So when I see a movie like A Journal for Jordan, it inspires me to keep sharing the messages I believe in. Writing in a journal, whether it’s on paper as in the movie, or using an app like Legacy Journal, makes you more consciously aware and present in your loved ones’ lives (even if like Michael B. Jordan’s character you might be thousands of miles away). Journaling ensures that the relationships with the most important people in your life continue to strengthen today, tomorrow, and even beyond your lifetime.
